Giethoorn

Accommodation Plompeblad is located in the old village of Giethoorn, along the canal, the main waterway that connects the various parts of Giethoorn. Within walking distance of the accommodation you will find a variety of restaurants. The village also has a few shops and a museum.

The famous features of Giethoorn are determined by the canals and ditches, the typical high wooden bridges and thatched farmhouses. The thatched “camelback” farmhouse is often seen in Giethoorn. The roof of the farm seems to have a hump because the back dome of the house is higher than the front. The old village has no roads, and the only access is via water over the many beautiful canals or on foot or bike over its wooden arch bridges. Though most of the travel is done via water, the village still does have sidewalks that make it easy for you to take in its sights by foot. The locals use so called “punters” , to get around and cars have to remain outside the village.

Water area
Giethoorn was formed due to peat extraction. Peat extraction is the removal of a peat soil layer. The peat that was excavated here was generally used as fuel. The removal of peat caused ponds and lakes to form. In order to transport the peat, the workers dug canals and ditches. That is why many farmhouses in the old Giethoorn are located on peninsulas and little islands, which are connected by wooden bridges.

While Giethoorn definitely has its appeal in the spring and summertime, it’s just as charming in the winter. The picturesque village is transformed into a cozy winter wonderland. Stroll along the illuminated authentic farms or take a heated canal cruise. And in a frost period, take to ice skating on the canals of Giethoorn and lakes of the Weerribben before warming up by the fireplace in a restaurant. Most bars and restaurants in Giethoorn are in fact open all winter weekends.

NP Weerribben-Wieden

Plompeblad Giethoorn borders the “De Wieden” section of the Weerribben-Wieden National Park. You sail with the electro boat right outside the door into the National Park. You can see all shades in the development from open water to swamp forest. Encroaching shoreline vegetation and densely growing water, floating silts, reed beds and nutrient-poor grassland. Typical swamp inhabitants such as birds, fish, mammals, reptiles and insects find a place in the varied vegetation and the special plant world.

Hunebeds at Havelte

The hunebeds (according to current theory, remains of prehistoric burial chambers) are a 20-minute drive away. These are located in an extensive heath area where you can enjoy a walk. Also nice to visit when you check out. You can then get back on the highway.

Orchideeën Hoeve Luttelgeest

If the weather is disappointing, you can divert to the Orchideeën Hoeve in Luttelgeest (about 25 minutes’ drive). There you will find a tropical garden with water features, birds and butterflies. You can spend a whole day here.
